America's 50 million health and green-minded organic consumers are already a potent force in the marketplace, making organics the fastest growing and most promising component in the nation's food and farming sector. To expand organic acreage and market penetration and safeguard standards in this $15 billion industry--in which demand already exceeds supply--it is now necessary to organize ourselves into a potent force for change, not only in the marketplace, but in the realm of public policy and politics as well. To initiate this process, the Organic Consumers Fund (OCF), a nationwide grassroots action and lobbying network, closely allied to the Organic Consumers Association, is compiling a non-partisan Elected Official Survey and Voter Guide for the Nov. 2006 local, state, and Congressional elections, which will include the past voting records of the 535 members of Congress.
The immediate goal of the OCF is to recruit thousands of progressive consumers and voters to distribute the following Elected Official Survey to each and every elected official in their area, and to encourage or pressure elected officials and their campaign committees to respond to the Survey.
A number of elected officials have already replied, while others, especially incumbents and leading major-party elected officials, will need encouragement from voters in their states and districts.
Following completion of the Survey and Voter Guide in October, the Guide will be distributed via email, telephone, mail, and websites to millions of organic consumers across the country, starting with the 850,000-person contact list of the Organic Consumers Fund.
